Salisbury & Sunnybank Medical Centres

Occupational Health

Our practice has a long association with industry and the provision of occupational health services.

Our services to industry include:

  1. Care of injured workers. This has become a large part of our practice.
  2. Medical examinations:
    • Pre-employment medicals
    • Executive health assessments and insurance medicals
    • Insurance Medicals
    • Employment fatigue medicals

As part of these examinations we use detailed pre examination questionnaires to assess risk factors. This is coupled to a physical examination including where necessary:

  • Provision of any necessary pathological investigations
  • Respiratory function testing
  • Basic and advanced cardiac testing
  • Skin checks
  • Advice on travel medicine

We are registered with the Department of Workplace Health and Safety to do hazardous substance medicals for many substances including lead, asbestosis, benzene, cadmium, isocyanate, mercury and moca.

Influenza Vaccination Programmes

Influenza is a highly contagious viral illness. 20% of the population catch it each year. The cost to Australia from influenza each year has been estimated at $880 million dollars.

Losses to industry for 2006 were $130.43 million with 1.5 million lost worker days! Studies have shown savings to business of $2.58 per dollar spent on vaccination programmes. (From economic report into costs of influenza to Australian health systems, March 2007)

Programmes should be held in March as vaccines take 2 weeks to become effective. Unfortunately the virus changes each year so vaccinations are required at 12 monthly intervals.
